Performance of the employees
is the reason for the organizations to achieve their strategies and to have a
sustainable competitive advantage. It is the main task of the organizations to
increase the performance and productivity of the employees using appropriate
tools.
Employee recognition is the open acknowledgment and expressed
appreciation for employees’ contributions to their organizations. Employee
recognition is used by many organizations to motive, enrich and energize their
employees to achieve organizational goals and objectives (Imran
et al., 2014). Recognition can take many forms. The
organizations placed attention on financial rewards and non-financial rewards
as recognition to motivate and appreciate their employees.
According to Luthans (2000)
though financial rewards satisfy and enhance the performance of more employees,
there are committed employees who expect some recognition in order to keep them
motivated, appreciated and committed.
Harrison (2005) stated that
the organizations have to focus on effective recognitions. It occurs with
strong supportive culture where the organization understands the psychology of
appreciating employees for their good work. By employee recognition they
encourage other employees to initiate working relationship.
Employee Recognition Programs
According to Punke (2013) recognition should be maintained based on performance basis and value basis. Saunderson (2004) mentioned that there are three types of recognition; formal recognition, informal recognition and everyday recognition.
Formal Recognition – Rewarding
and recognizing individuals, teams and departments on a company-wide level
performing actions that work beyond ordinary work expectations. Mostly the
priority is given to the employees who have done many years of service (Punke,
2013).
Informal Recognition -
Basically focus on performance achievements and goal accomplishments by
individuals or teams that may take place monthly or quarterly. It includes
low-cost awards, refreshments, incentives, gift cards, and certificates. (WorldatWork
Report, 2011).
Day-to-day Recognition - Is a recognition practice taking place frequently (daily or weekly). It includes low or no cost. These kinds of recognitions are immediate; intangible can be given to all employees like Positive feedback given on interpersonal skills (WorldatWork Report, 2011).
Importance of employee Recognition
If the organization does not focus on employee recognition, it is missing the productivity of the workforce day by day. Companies practicing recognition enjoy the high employees' engagement and performance.

2. Employees’ productivity is boosted
3. Increased employee retention
4. Employees are highly satisfied
5. Expected cultural transformation
Conclusion
Employee recognition programs have become more popular due to limitation of monetary rewards, because monetary rewards lead to motivate only up to a certain level. But non monetary rewards – employee recognition enables individual to better understand that their work is values and appreciated. This will help to improves morale, enhance loyalty and employee retention rate in the organization. Therefore the mangers commit reliable resources to the design and implementation of employee recognition programs to yield better outcome.
Management should consider the employee recognition as an investment rather than a cost and should provide meaningful and valued recognition. They should evaluate recognition programs and ensure that the recognition programs fulfill the expectations of the organization as well as the needs of employees. There should be fairness and equality in the designing and implementing of a recognition program.
